Ilchie, La Luna & the El Fuerte Legacy
Jacob purchased Ilchie in his late teens when she was only a few weeks old. Her breeder was relocating, and the only way to acquire her was to buy the entire herd—so he did. Jacob was drawn to her refined look, elegant stretch, and distinctively “kinky” Lanuda-type fleece—what many referred to as a “suri llama” before the suri llama/alpaca hybrids became common. Ilchie was a granddaughter of Martha My Dear, Jacob’s first female llama purchased in 1993. Over her lifetime, Ilchie produced nine offspring—six females and three males. Her crias were vigorous and growthy, with her standout being La Luna, sired by El Fuerte’s son El Forte. El Fuerte himself was one of 42 males imported from Peru in the landmark 1993 Peruvian Select Sale and quickly became recognized as one of the most influential sires in North America. Despite arriving from Peru emaciated and recovering from spinal injuries sustained during transport, his strength and presence were undeniable—befitting his name, which means “The Strong One.” His offspring were known for their long necks, balanced conformation, elegance, and especially their tractable, gentle temperaments. Hinterland considered him their best breeding male, producing 61 registered crias and leaving a lasting legacy of quality and consistency. La Luna represented the blending of Mumford and Hinterland genetics at their best—3rd generation Mumford breeding strengthened by the El Fuerte influence. She produced nine offspring (seven females, two males) making her line a cornerstone of our herd. Daughters by Abilene, Catwalker, Mach’s High Stakes Gambler, and Luminoso (a Samponero son and El Fuerte grandson) have proven foundational. As of October 2025, ten of our foundation females and two of our breeding males descend directly from the Luna line, with ten of our seventeen 2025 crias tracing to her through either the dam or sire. To say this lineage has shaped our breeding program would be an understatement. |
